SeetherSeether singer and guitarist Shaun Morgan’s inspiration stems from a lack of acceptance. His parents divorced early on in his native South Africa. His Afrikaans mother’s devout Christian family held him in disregard because he was part English on his father’s side. His paternal family shunned him for being into rock music and dressing the part. These hostile environs culminated in a defining moment, as Morgan sat with a gun in one hand and a guitar in the other, facing a choice:"It was suicide or the guitar. I picked the guitar and got rid of the urge to take myself out," Morgan says. After forming in 1999, Seether quickly gained notoriety in South Africa’s anemic rock market. The band emerged as a top live draw no small feat in a land where rock bands play second banana to indigenous music and pop and caught the attention of Wind Up Records. Seether’s U.S. debut, Disclaimer (2002), features Morgan’s darkly self-obsessed lyrics and post-grunge guitar attack. Produced by Jay Baumgardner (Papa Roach, Drowning Pool), this record offers a transparent glimpse into Morgan’s childhood. Seether achieved further success when follow-up Karma and Effect (2003) hit the Top Ten. A primarily acoustic live album, One Cold Night (2006), showcases a more stripped-down version of Morgan’s haunting songwriting, delivered with the help of his Alvarez acoustic.
